Before You Begin

How to Find Your Tone

Use these simple tests to identify your skin tone category accurately.

☀️

Sun Test

Fair skin burns easily. Wheatish tans quickly but rarely burns. Dusky and dark skin barely burns.

🩻

Vein Test

Check inner wrist in natural light. Blue-purple veins = cool undertone. Green veins = warm undertone.

💍

Jewellery Test

Gold flatters you more = warm undertone. Silver flatters you = cool undertone. Most South Indian women have warm undertones.

🪞

Mirror Test

Hold fabric near your face in daylight. If your face looks brighter and alive — that colour is for you.

✦ South Indian Skin Note

Most South Indian women fall in the wheatish-to-dusky range with warm undertones — meaning gold jewellery and warm, rich, earthy colours will almost always flatter. The classic Tamil tradition of gold Kanjivaram with rich jewel-tone borders is built on this exact understanding.

Fair Skin

Fair

Cool · Warm · Neutral

Characteristics

Light, porcelain or pinkish complexion. Burns easily in the sun. Less common in South India but present — often with pink or peachy undertones.

🌿 Casual — Peach, Mint, Powder Blue, Blush Pink 💼 Office — Navy, Bottle Green, Black, Teal ✨ Festive — Maroon, Ruby Red, Deep Purple, Gold

⚠ Be Mindful Of

Very pale off-white and beige without contrast borders can wash out fair skin. Avoid very light pastels with no definition. Pair soft colours with a rich contrasting blouse or gold border for definition.

✦ MammaHug Tip

Our Tissue Linen sarees in Deep Red or Royal Blue with gold zari borders are especially stunning on fair skin. For office, our Navy Blue Pure Linen is a classic.

Wheatish / Medium Skin

Wheatish

Warm Golden · Olive

Characteristics

The most common skin tone in South India. Golden-wheat to olive complexion. Tans easily. Most versatile skin tone — carries both bold and muted shades beautifully.

⚠ Be Mindful Of

Ash grey, washed-out pastels, and very pale icy blues can make wheatish skin look dull. Muddy browns without warmth also flatten this skin tone.

✦ MammaHug Tip

Almost every handloom we stock was curated with your skin tone in mind! Our Mul Cotton in Marigold or Teal and our Tissue Linen with Gold Zari are particularly beautiful on wheatish skin.

Dusky Skin

✦ A Common Misconception — Corrected

Many guides tell dusky women to wear "bright neons" — that is wrong. Dusky skin is warm and rich — it glows in deep jewel tones, earthy richness, and vibrant saturated colours. Think Deepika Padukone, Anushka Shetty — all dusky women who shine in maroon, deep purple, emerald, and sapphire.

Dusky

Rich Warm Brown

Characteristics

Rich warm-brown to coppery complexion. Deep, glowing skin. Most common in South India. Warm undertones. Incredibly versatile — jewel tones and earthy richness look extraordinary.

🌿 Casual — Mustard, Terracotta, Teal Green, Lavender, Pale Blue 💼 Office — Maroon, Peacock Blue, Navy, Emerald, Indigo ✨ Festive — Deep Purple, Fuchsia, Rani Pink, Gold, Burgundy, Ruby Red

⚠ Be Mindful Of

Ash grey, flat beige, dull khaki, and very pale pastels without definition can wash out dusky skin. Avoid extremely bright neons — they clash with warm, rich skin tones. Choose colours with richness, depth, or warmth.

✦ MammaHug Tip

If you are dusky-toned, maroon, deep purple, peacock blue, emerald green, and burgundy are your best friends. Our Linen sarees in Maroon and Emerald, and Tissue sarees with gold zari on deep jewel-tone backgrounds, are made for you. The classic Kasavu cream with bold gold border is also breathtaking on dusky skin.

Dark Skin

Dark

Rich · Deep · Luminous

Characteristics

Deep, rich, melanin-rich complexion. Natural luminosity in sunlight. The most dramatic skin tone for high-contrast and bold colours. Both vivid brights and deep jewels look extraordinary.

✦ Bold Brights — High Contrast, Maximum Impact

Golden Yellow
Magenta / Fuchsia
Bright Orange
Rani Pink
Ivory / Cream
Turquoise

✦ Deep Jewel Tones — Richness on Richness

Burgundy

Navy Blue
Dark Maroon
🌿 Casual — Ivory, Golden Yellow, Turquoise, Rani Pink 💼 Office — Burgundy, Indigo, Forest Green, Navy, Charcoal Grey ✨ Festive — Gold, Bright Orange, Magenta, Deep Red, Fuchsia, Violet

⚠ Be Mindful Of

Wearing all-dark colours head to toe reduces contrast. Balance with a contrasting bright blouse or statement jewellery. Flat, unsaturated shades (pale grey, dull taupe) don't give enough contrast to let dark skin shine.

✦ MammaHug Tip

Dark skin is absolutely gorgeous in gold — our Tissue sarees with gold zari shimmer like nothing else on a deep complexion. Bright orange, ivory Kasavu with bold gold border, magenta, and deep burgundy are all extraordinary choices.

Always Remember

The 3 Golden Rules

01

Wear What Makes You Glow

This guide is your starting point — not a rulebook. If a colour makes you feel radiant, wear it. The best colour is the one that makes your face light up when you hold it near.

02

Your Blouse Changes Everything

A contrasting blouse can make any saree work for any skin tone. Dark saree + bright blouse = beautiful balance. Soft saree + deep blouse = instant depth.

03

Natural Light is Your Best Mirror

Always check a saree in natural daylight. Screen and shop lighting can fool you. The true beauty of handloom reveals itself only in sunlight.

A Special Note for South Indian Women

Most South Indian women have warm undertones — meaning gold jewellery, gold zari, and warm earthy or jewel-toned sarees will almost always be the most flattering choice. The tradition of Kanjivaram and gold Kasavu is rooted in this truth.
